Elon Musk has predicted that AI will surpass human intelligence by 2026. In a recent interview, the Tesla CEO said that the “world’s smartest people” are entering the AI sector, which is experiencing a boom.
Musk stated:
My guess is we’ll have AI that is smarter than any one human probably around the end of next year…If you define AGI as smarter than the smartest human, I think it’s probably next year, within two years.
This forecast is a revision of Musk’s earlier prediction that achieving ‘full’ artificial general intelligence (AGI) would occur by 2029.
Challenges and ethical implications
Musk highlighted some challenges to AI development, including data scarcity, a GPU shortage, and electricity demands. He also discussed the ethical implications of AI, believing that it could be dangerous for people, but that the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Expert opinions
Despite Musk’s predictions, some experts believe that machines are still a long way from reaching human-level intelligence. Daphne Koller, a former Stanford computer science professor, stated that machines are only beginning to scratch the surface of available data.
Grady Booch, a vocal critic of AI hype, also raised concerns about Musk’s track record in predicting AI advancements, pointing out that some of his past predictions have not come true.
